Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure the construction of a memorial for former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh at his final resting place, emphasizing the profound respect he commands across the nation.
In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, Kharge stated, “This request is in keeping with the tradition of having memorials of statesmen and former Prime Ministers at the very place of their funerals.”
Phenomenal Contributions of Dr Manmohan Singh
Kharge highlighted the phenomenal contribution of Dr Singh, particularly in economic and fiscal matters. He underscored the former Prime Minister’s extensive experience, including his tenure as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Chief Economic Advisor, and other pivotal roles in various esteemed organizations.
Recalling Dr Singh’s instrumental role during the economic crisis, Kharge said, “When the nation was in the throes of a grave economic crisis, it was Dr Manmohan Singh, as Finance Minister, who took India out of the crisis and led the country towards economic prosperity and stability. The nation today reaps the benefits of the robust economic foundations built by him.”
Request for a Befitting Memorial
In his letter, Kharge appealed for a befitting tribute to Dr Singh. He expressed his hope that the government would honor his stature by ensuring his funeral takes place at a location where a memorial can be constructed.
“In view of the foregoing, I hope and trust that befitting the stature of Dr Manmohan Singh, the above request will be acceded,” he concluded.
