Left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh, who has developed into a specialist in death overs since his debut, credits his success to constructive self-criticism and consistently improving his game by even the smallest margin.
The 26-year-old, representing Punjab Kings in the IPL, played a crucial role in his teamβs 11-run victory over Gujarat Titans, claiming key wickets of Sai Sudharsan and Sherfane Rutherford in their opening match of the season.
Discussing his growth as a cricketer, Arshdeep told JioHotstar: βThe key is to improve by 1% to 1.5% after every game, every day β whether the performance was good or bad. Iβve always believed that the biggest room in the world is the room for improvement.
βSo, whenever I get the chance, I engage in constructive self-criticism and strive to enhance my skill set, even if itβs just by 1% or half a percent.β
PBKS, currently captained by stylish batter Shreyas Iyer, are looking to break their long-standing jinx of never winning an IPL title. Arshdeep is optimistic about the team’s chances this season.
Speaking about his rapport with Shreyas Iyer and the new skipperβs leadership style, Arshdeep shared: βI have played under Iyerβs captaincy before in the Duleep Trophy, and I really enjoyed it. He always backed his players and gave them the freedom to express themselves.
βWhat Iβve observed here is that his approach remains the same β he doesnβt impose rigid instructions but encourages players to trust their skills and play for the team.
βHe promotes a selfless mindset, assuring players of his full support. I really admire this, and as players, we will do our best to help him and contribute towards winning the title.β
Arshdeep, who has taken 78 wickets in 66 IPL matches and 99 wickets in 63 T20 Internationals for India, emphasized his willingness to step up in pressure situations.
βI enjoy stepping up when the team is under pressure β whether itβs stopping runs or taking wickets. When they hand me the ball in crucial moments, it feels good to know that they trust me.
βI genuinely enjoy the added responsibility, regardless of the situation. I try not to feel the pressure and instead focus on delivering my best for the team.
βSuccess doesnβt come overnight, but I ensure that any setbacks donβt affect my bowling. Every time I get another opportunity, I give my all to help the team win,β Arshdeep said.
