The researchers identified a <strong>critical factor<\/strong> that determines how rainfall influences dengue transmission: the <strong>variation in dry season length<\/strong>, or how long a dry season lasts before the arrival of rain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Flushing Out vs. Creating Breeding Sites<\/strong><br>In areas with <strong>shorter dry seasons<\/strong>, rainfall helps <strong>flush out stagnant water<\/strong>, reducing the number of <strong>mosquito breeding sites<\/strong> and thereby <strong>suppressing dengue spread<\/strong>. However, in regions with <strong>longer or more variable dry seasons<\/strong>, <strong>sporadic rainfall<\/strong> can create new breeding sites, allowing mosquito populations to grow and <strong>increasing dengue cases<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Global Implications and Future Research<\/strong><br>The researchers extended their study to <strong>Puerto Rico<\/strong>, using data from municipalities such as <strong>San Juan, Adjuntas<\/strong>, and <strong>Ponce<\/strong> between <strong>1986 and 2005<\/strong>.
