Jaishankar<\/strong> has clarified that the <strong>India-Pakistan understanding to cease hostilities<\/strong> was the result of <strong>direct negotiations<\/strong> between the two nations, rejecting claims by <strong>US President Donald Trump<\/strong> that Washington played a mediating role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an interview to Dutch broadcaster <strong>NOS<\/strong> during his ongoing Europe tour, Jaishankar emphasized that while global powers expressed concern during the military standoff, <strong>the ceasefire was a bilateral decision<\/strong> reached independently by New Delhi and Islamabad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cThe cessation of firing and military action was something which was negotiated directly between India and Pakistan,\u201d Jaishankar said, underscoring India&#8217;s sovereign decision-making.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He further stated that India made it explicitly clear to all parties, including the United States, that <strong>Pakistan must convey its intent to halt hostilities directly to India<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cWe told everyone, including the US, that if the Pakistanis want to stop fighting, they need to tell us directly. Their general has to call up our general \u2013 and that is exactly what happened,\u201d he said.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This statement comes in the wake of President Trump\u2019s repeated assertions that <strong>Washington helped broker the truce<\/strong>, following the dramatic escalation in military tensions earlier this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Operation Sindoor Still Active<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Jaishankar also reaffirmed India&#8217;s right to respond to terrorism emanating from across the border. Referring to <strong>Operation Sindoor<\/strong>, the precision strikes carried out by India on <strong>May 7<\/strong> targeting nine terrorist infrastructure sites in Pakistan and PoJK, he said the operation continues as a <strong>clear message<\/strong> to Pakistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cIf the terrorists are in Pakistan, we will hit them where they are. The operation continues not for the sake of conflict, but as a deterrent against future attacks,\u201d Jaishankar asserted.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The strikes came in retaliation to the <strong>April 22 Pahalgam terror attack<\/strong>, which Jaishankar described as \u201cbarbaric\u201d. He revealed that the attackers <strong>singled out victims based on their religion<\/strong>, committing mass murder with the aim of igniting religious discord in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cIt was imperative to respond. The lack of response was not an option,\u201d he said firmly.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Ceasefire Amid Retaliatory Strikes<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Following India\u2019s surgical operations, <strong>Pakistan attempted retaliatory strikes<\/strong> on <strong>May 8, 9, and 10<\/strong>, targeting Indian military installations. These attempts were swiftly repelled with heavy retaliation, causing significant damage to Pakistani military assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On <strong>May 10<\/strong>, <strong>Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri<\/strong> officially announced that <strong>India and Pakistan had agreed to halt all military actions across land, air, and sea<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Talks Possible \u2013 But Only on PoJK and Terrorism<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Jaishankar also opened the door for dialogue with Pakistan \u2014 but with clear boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cWe are willing to talk to Pakistan, but only about the return of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoJK) and on the issue of terrorism,\u201d he said.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked about the potential impact of regional tensions with Pakistan and China on India\u2019s economic growth, the minister dismissed the notion of choosing between security and prosperity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cSecurity and economic growth are part of the same coin. You can\u2019t grow without security.
