Prime Minister Narendra Modi<\/strong> on Thursday extended a warm welcome to Russian President Vladimir Putin<\/strong>, who arrived in New Delhi for a nearly 27-hour visit aimed at strengthening the eight-decade-long India\u2013Russia strategic partnership. Putin\u2019s visit\u2014the first in four years\u2014comes at a time of significant geopolitical churn, adding weight to the long-standing bilateral ties.<\/p>\n

Modi received the Russian leader at Palam Airport<\/strong>, greeting him with a hug as artists performed traditional dances in honour of the visiting dignitary. From the airport, the two leaders travelled together in the Prime Minister\u2019s car, mirroring their ride in Putin\u2019s vehicle during the SCO Summit<\/strong> in Tianjin three months ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cDelighted to welcome my friend, President Putin, to India. India\u2013Russia friendship is time-tested and has greatly benefited our people,\u201d Modi posted on social media.<\/p>\n

Private Dinner Sets Tone for Summit<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In the evening, the Prime Minister hosted a private dinner<\/strong> for Putin at his official residence, decorated with lights and flowers for the occasion. The informal interaction is expected to set the tone for the 23rd India\u2013Russia Annual Summit<\/strong> on Friday, where both sides are likely to announce several agreements to further expand the partnership.<\/p>\n

Defence cooperation, efforts to insulate bilateral trade from external pressure and collaboration in small modular nuclear reactors<\/strong> are expected to be the focus areas\u2014issues that will be closely observed by Western nations.<\/p>\n

Putin\u2019s visit assumes added significance amid a rapid downturn in India\u2013US relations<\/strong>, particularly on trade and strategic issues.<\/p>\n

Packed Diplomatic Schedule<\/strong><\/h3>\n

On Friday, Putin will receive a ceremonial welcome and tri-services guard of honour at Rashtrapati Bhavan<\/strong>, followed by a visit to Raj Ghat<\/strong> to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi.<\/p>\n

The leaders will then hold restricted and delegation-level talks at Hyderabad House<\/strong>, after which both will address a business gathering jointly organised by FICCI<\/strong> and Roscongress<\/strong> at Bharat Mandapam<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the evening, President Droupadi Murmu<\/strong> will host a state banquet in Putin\u2019s honour. He is scheduled to depart New Delhi around 9 pm.<\/p>\n

Energy, Trade and Defence Take Centre Stage<\/strong><\/h3>\n

New Delhi is expected to raise concerns regarding the growing trade imbalance<\/strong>, driven largely by India\u2019s increased imports of discounted Russian crude oil.<\/p>\n

In an interview released on Thursday, Putin defended India\u2019s energy purchases from Russia, saying:<\/p>\n

  • Western criticism is politically motivated;<\/li>\n
  • The US itself continues to buy Russian nuclear fuel;<\/li>\n
  • India has every right to secure energy supplies in its national interest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    \u201cNeither Prime Minister Modi nor I have ever approached our cooperation to work against anyone,\u201d Putin said. \u201cOur focus is on safeguarding the interests of both nations.\u201d<\/p>\n

    He praised Modi\u2019s leadership, calling him a decisive leader who \u201cdoes not succumb to pressure easily.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Defence Ties Deepen<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Earlier in the day, India and Russia agreed to further enhance defence cooperation during talks between Defence Minister Rajnath Singh<\/strong> and his Russian counterpart Andrey Belousov<\/strong>. New Delhi expressed strong interest in procuring additional S-400 missile systems<\/strong> to bolster India’s air defence capabilities.<\/p>\n

    Both sides reaffirmed that their defence partnership\u2014spanning naval construction, missile development and aircraft engineering\u2014is built on a \u201cdeep sense of trust, common principles and mutual respect.\u201d<\/p>\n
