The matter will next be heard on <strong>December 15<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>\u201cJournalist Facing Six Cases,\u201d Sibal Tells Court<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>During the brief hearing, Sibal noted that Langa was facing <strong>six different cases<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p> The ED\u2019s counsel countered, saying, \u201cThe journalist is accused of extortion,\u201d while seeking a short adjournment due to the unavailability of <strong>Solicitor General Tushar Mehta<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court had earlier, on <strong>September 8<\/strong>, issued notices to the <strong>Gujarat Government<\/strong> and the ED on Langa\u2019s bail plea.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Bench Questions Nature of Journalism Involved<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>While issuing notice in September, the bench had remarked:<\/p>\n<p> <strong>\u201cWhat kind of a journalist is he? With due respect, there are very genuine journalists. But there are also people who ride around on scooters saying they are \u2018patrakar\u2019, and everyone knows what they actually do.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sibal responded that the allegations were unproven and that Langa had been repeatedly granted anticipatory bail before the ED case was invoked.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Background of the Case<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Gujarat High Court<\/strong> rejected Langa\u2019s bail plea on <strong>July 31<\/strong>, citing possible prejudice to the prosecution.<\/li>\n<li>The ED arrested him on <strong>February 25<\/strong> in connection with an alleged financial fraud.<\/li>\n<li>Langa was first arrested in <strong>October 2024<\/strong> in a <strong>GST fraud case<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The money laundering case stems from <strong>two FIRs<\/strong> filed by Ahmedabad Police for fraud, cheating, criminal breach of trust, misappropriation, and causing wrongful loss of lakhs of rupees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Langa remains in judicial custody as the Supreme Court prepares to hear the matter later this month<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to file its reply within three days on the bail plea of journalist Mahesh Langa, who is facing charges under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in connection with an alleged financial fraud.
