The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Monday that the southwest monsoon is likely to enter the sub-Himalayan districts of West Bengal, including Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Jalpaiguri, within the next three to four days. This forecast comes as northern districts of the state start to experience pre-monsoon rainfall.

The IMD reported that conditions have become favorable for the advancement of the monsoon, although the expected entry date is notable for missing the normal timeline of June 6. As the relentless heat prevails in southern Bengal, residents can expect a shift in the weather pattern soon.

Meteorologists predict heavy rainfall in the coming days specifically targeting the sub-Himalayan regions, including Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar. The IMD’s bulletin highlighted that these areas are poised for substantial precipitation over the next two days.

Despite the impending rains, the humidity remains high across southern Bengal, with some regions experiencing scattered showers. Following a system of pre-monsoon activity, Alipurduar registered the highest rainfall in the past 24 hours, measuring an impressive 133 mm before 8.30 am on Monday. Other districts reported their share of showers, with Jalpaiguri receiving 53 mm, Cooch Behar 18 mm, Darjeeling observing 7.8 mm, and Kalimpong documenting 19 mm.

The IMD’s insights indicate that urban infrastructure may soon be tested as waterlogging becomes a concern during heavy showers. Local authorities are urged to prepare for possible flooding scenarios and to remain vigilant in weather monitoring.

As the southwest monsoon approaches, experts warn residents to remain informed on weather updates and to take necessary precautions during the period of heavy rainfall. Meteorological authorities suggest that maintaining awareness of sudden weather changes will be crucial for safety during this transitional season.
