Jammu, October 8, 2026: The Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu, in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) from the Ministry of Health, conducted a significant two-day workshop focusing on cancer prevention and screening strategies on October 7 and 8, 2026. This initiative specifically addressed breast, oral, cervical, and gastric cancers in the regions of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

This critical workshop aimed to bring together various stakeholders, including medical experts, researchers, government officials, and programme officers, with a focus on creating effective, evidence-based strategies for enhancing cancer detection, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up services in the region. With cancer rates on the rise, the workshop was timely, emphasizing the urgent need for improved early detection and management strategies.

Workshops Essentials and Expert Contributions

Leading the workshop were prominent figures such as Dr. Ashutosh Gupta, Principal of GMC Jammu, and Dr. Jyotsna Suri, Head of Pathology and Nodal Officer of the Multi-Disciplinary Research Unit at GMC Jammu. They were joined by the ICMR team, including Dr. Nisha Jose, Dr. Pramit Gosh, Dr. Bhawana Sirohi, Dr. Supriya Malik, and Dr. Bisavjit Dubashi, who brought invaluable expertise in oncology and public health to the discussions.

The workshop’s sessions covered practical challenges in healthcare implementation, focusing on local healthcare needs. Another highlight included discussions on data management and the REDCap online platform. This session, led by Dr. Pulkit Verma, underscored the significance of effective data collection and management systems in evaluating cancer intervention efficacy.

Improving Breast Cancer Outcomes

One of the primary goals of the workshop was to develop a concrete proposal aimed at enhancing breast cancer survival rates in Jammu & Kashmir. Participants addressed critical areas in the breast cancer care continuum, including awareness campaigns, screening initiatives, and ensuring timely access to treatment. Collaborative discussions focused on identifying key opportunities where evidence-based interventions could significantly improve patient outcomes.

Comprehensive Cancer Screening Strategies

The workshop also introduced a comprehensive strategy for the prevention and screening of major cancers, which is expected to reinforce population-level health initiatives. Attendees deliberated on ways to effectively identify high-risk groups and strengthen existing screening services, as well as establish robust referral pathways for patients needing additional investigations.

Strengthening Collaboration for Cancer Care

The collaborative effort between GMC Jammu and ICMR highlighted the necessity of integrating expert knowledge with local healthcare practices. The involvement of both national-level researchers and local health professionals demonstrated the potential for effective public health programme development tailored to regional needs. This workshop could lay the groundwork for a cohesive approach towards cancer prevention and treatment across Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

Future Directions

The outcomes from this workshop are poised to enhance various facets of cancer care:

  • Boosting awareness and cancer prevention activities.
  • Improving screening processes for prominent cancers.
  • Fostering early detection and timely diagnosis measures.
  • Establishing stronger referral systems within care pathways.
  • Enhancing treatment protocols for breast cancer and improving survival rates.
  • Creating adaptable intervention strategies based on local needs.
  • Implementing effective data management practices using modern digital tools.
  • Building bridges between research entities, government bodies, and medical colleges.

A Landmark Initiative in Cancer Control

The ICMR workshop represents a crucial advancement toward developing a coordinated, evidence-driven cancer control strategy for Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. By assembling a blend of policymakers, researchers, and healthcare providers, this initiative aims to ensure that research innovations translate into practical benefits for patients. The core mission remains to facilitate early cancer detection, ensure timely treatment access, and ultimately enhance life quality for those impacted by cancer in the region.
